Still bay Flying Club - Established 1985

Still Bay Aerodrome (FACY) Based in Still Bay

October 1975 a portion of stand 238 was allocated for the development of the Still Bay Airfield. February 1976 the design for the airfield development was approved. From then to May 1979 a partnership between the Regional Council, the Still Bay Municipal Board and a few Private Individuals attempted to raise the funds for this development.

By May 1979 only 15% of the required funding could be raised. From August to September 1979 a local contractor was employed to prepare the runway surfaces and erect basic features such as a windsock and concrete run-up areas. Augustus 1984 the Municipal Board approved the erection of aircraft hangars on the premises and articulates a policy whereby the Municipal Board reserves all rights. After this approval another 10 such structures were approved for erection.

During 1985 the Municipal Board revisited and approved the construction of the secondary runway, the extension of the main runway by 200m, and an alternative access road, but this decision was never implemented. This decision was confirmed on 21 October 1985 when the Director of the Department of Environmental Affairs & Tourism in Cape Town approved the modification in writing.

A flying club was established earlier (1985) but did not officially formulate. Over the past 30 years of its existence, the Still Bay airfield has at times been very popular with a sector of the flying community who owns property in the area. In 2009, a few of these flying enthusiasts and locals decided to re-establish the Still Bay Flying Club, to negotiate with the Hessequa Municipality for re-zoning and a lease of the airfield.

A constitution was drawn up and signed. But no formal membership was established until the lease agreement could be finalised. In 2021 the re-zoning of the airfield was finalised.
In September 2023 the lease agreement was finalised and signed between the Hessequa Municipality and the Still Bay Flying Club. The Club’s Constitution was amended, and formal membership, rules and procedures were formulated and accepted by the members present at the inaugural meeting in January 2024.
